The first edition of the World Plogging Championship will be held from 1st to 3rd October and it will take place in Val Pellice territories, on Piedmont’ Alps. About a hundred athletes are going to compete to become the first World Plogging Champion. The score is going to be calculated according to three parameters: distance, elevation gain, and collected waste, converted in equivalent CO2 saved.

The athletes have been selected through five qualifying races (Gran Trail Courmayeur, TMT, Trail EDF Cenis Tour, Alpe Adria Trail, TorX) and as a result of a virtual challenge, open to everyone. The widespread qualifying phase has resulted in 89 kg of saved CO2 until now – over 60 kg of abandoned waste has been collected and differentiated by the athletes.

In addition to these athletes, a number of top runners will take part of the competition: as Silvia Trigueros Garrote, Basque runner, 3-times Tor des Geants winner, Pablo Criado Toca, on the Tor des Geants podium, Marina Plevan, ranked second in the gruelling Tor des Glacier, Paolo Bert, 100 Miglia Monviso winner and ascent-descent record man, Erik Ahlström, Swedish athlete, mostly known as the inventor of the term “plogging”.

This first edition will have exceptional godmother and godfather: Hillary Gerardi, American athlete called “the most smiling sky-runner ever” who works for the research centre for ecosystems, and Marco De Gasperi, several times European Mountain Running champion, and ascent-descent Mont Blanc champion.

Besides the competition scheduled for Saturday 2nd October, the program of the kermess in the heart of Waldensian valleys includes a lot of events related to environmental issues that are going to engage citizens and tourists as well.

The manifestation, designed by Roberto Cavallo, ultrarunner and plogging pioneer in Italy, CEO of ERICA Soc. Coop., and national environmental communication leader, is coordinated by an organizing committee composed by ERICA Soc. Coop., AICA, the Municipality of Torre Pellice, Unione Montana del Pinerolese (which also includes the territories of the competition, Luserna San Giovanni, Lusernetta, Torre Pellice, Bobbio Pellice, Angrogna, Rorà, Villar Pellice), ACEA, ASD Valle Pellice, ASD Valle Infernotto, Polisportiva Bobbiese. During the event, territorial sport and environmental associations will present their educational and informative activities to liven up the days of the competition.
